I’ll admit it, I’ve got champagne taste and beer budget, but as it was mine and the other half’s 10th anniversary we decided to splash out and upgrade our flights to Thailand to celebrate.
Qatar Airways are one of the best airlines in the world and have won countless awards to prove it. Their business class product is very highly regarded and I couldn’t wait to try it out! Business class would usually be out of my price range but Qatar are known for their incredible sales and selling heavily discounted business class seats. To say I was excited is a bit of an understatement!
Our trip to Thailand was 4 flights on 3 different aircraft type; 2 Boeing 787-800 Dreamliners, 1 Airbus A380-800 and 1 Boeing 777-300ER. Being a bit of a #Avgeek, it was the Dreamliners and the A380 that I was most looking forward to. Both of these aircraft have the same style of seat and a 1-2-1 configuration. The seat/fully flat bed is oh so comfy with loads of gadgets, gizmos and storage space (who doesn’t want a little drawer for their shoes?!). You can fiddle with the position of the seat to your heart’s content and the massage function helps to relax and get some important shut-eye. The seat on the 777 is similar, albeit an older design and 2-2-2 configuration. What struck me about the 777 is the sheer amount of space the seats have. Even when in bed mode there’s enough space for the window passenger to get to the aisle without disturbing their neighbour.
It’s almost impossible not to smile and take a deep, relaxing breath whilst dining Qatar Airways style. Their business class meal service makes me think about the early days of long haul flying; oh the glamour of it all! The food is of restaurant quality and presentation.
You dine when you want on what you want and drinks were kept topped up. The bonus of the A380 is the on-board bar area which, due to the timing of our flight, didn’t get used very much. That meant that we got the place to ourselves, which was a real treat!
Whilst the seat and dining can define the on-board experience, it’s the little extras which add the extra special touch. A welcome drink of champagne or a cocktail, your choice of hot or cold towel, cotton pyjamas and Giorgio Armani amenity kits are just some of the finer touches that make flying a pleasure.

Price paid: £1050 per person. For this trip, the fare was significantly cheaper to fly out of Edinburgh and in to Birmingham.
Points earned: approx 16000 Avios per person for the flight plus 4000 Virgin Flying Club points for paying on the Black Amex.
